Ayinger Oktober Fest-Marzen

As I write this, in late September, the trees are still mostly garbed in their green, Summer attire, but there's a hint of Autumn in the air: cooler temperatures, , lower humidity, softer light and the arrival of one of my favorite beers: Oktober Fest-Marzen. River City Cellars carries several of these delicious beers from both Germany and the United States, but while I sample any and all with gusto, my favorite remains the one from Ayinger.

The history of Oktober Fest dates to October 12, 1810 when Bavarian Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese and a coppery, malty beer was served during the party that followed. The beer became an instant hit, and each year, Munich relives this Bacchanalian festival with this special beer.

This year, the Oktober Fest beer has perhaps some added meaning for me since I'm getting married on October 21 (I Love You, Celeste!). While I'm patiently counting down the days until I can say, "I do," I'm not holding off on enjoying the Ayinger Oktober Fest. It pours a rich amber color, with a nice head and has delicate malty nuttiness that recalls pumpkin seeds and brown bread. It's a great beer to have on hand for a crisp, cool Fall evening when one can sit outside, gaze up at the stars, and share some time with those closest to you.
